TRINIDAD and Tobago Under-16 netballers are aiming to cop the top spot in this year’s Jean Pierre Championship to take place April 8-18 in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Last year the TT girls finished third in the tournament one spot lower than the silver medal in 2008.

But public relations officer Lynette Duncan said yesterday, “we are hoping to achieve the first position and the gold medal this time.”

She said the team has been hard in training since February under coach Naomi Babb.

“They endure a series of intense training sessions at the Jean Pierre Complex weekly,” Duncan added.

The squad of 15 players will be trimmed to 12 before they go into a live-in camp tomorrow at the Ministry Community Development, St Ann’s, to continue preparations.

Trinidad and Tobago once shared the world netball crown and Duncan made it clear they are ready to reclaim that position.

She explained that all is being put in place for the young netballers to begin this difficult task by achieving the top spot at a tournament named after late “Calypso Girls” netballers star Jean Pierre.

They are equipped with a psychologist and other persons who can help them improve their performances.

Duncan insists the aim is to get all the girls at one level so that they will compete as a unit at the championship.

Meanwhile, the top “Calypso Girls” netballers are also in training for the qualifiers in St Lucia in July for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games. Duncan said it will be the first time that the Trinidad and Tobago girls will contest the qualifiers but they are confident of securing a place at the Commonwealth Games, carded for New Delhi, India, in October.

The team is being coached by ex-national goal shoot Bridgette Adams and trains on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Complex.
