NUMBER two seed Richard Chung defeated Tobago’s Adrian De Silva in straight sets yesterday to progress to the quarter-final of the Men’s Singles division as the Ocean Spray Top 16 tennis Tournament got underway at the St James Tennis Club, St James. The match was expected to be a tricky one for national champion Chung as De Silva, the national under-16 winner, is known for giving the top players a few problems. Chung was able to get past the Tobagonian, however, coming out victorious 6-4, 6-3.

Third seed Vaughn Wilson got a scare from Mc Colin Fontenelle in round one but came out triumphant after his opponent retired.

Wilson won the opening set 6-4 but Fontenelle came back strongly to take the second set 4-6. Wilson was in full control in the deciding set before his rival retired hurt with the score 4-0 in favour of the Tennis TT Player of the Year.

Fourth seed Luke De Caires had no trouble against Brendan Da Costa, prevailing in two. De Silva was the losing finalist at the 2010 Tranquillity Open and will be fancying his chances on clay yet again.

Also, Michael Clarke crushed Tyler Mayers 6-1, 6-2 to book his place in the last eight.

Clarke will now face De Caires in the quarter-final. The Top 16 Men’s Singles served off yesterday with 15 players as Keegan De Silva was scratched from the competition with a wrist injury.

In the Women’s draw, Olivia Johnston came from a set down to defeat Emily Hart 2-1. Hart started with a 3-6 win in the opener but Johnston levelled with a comfortable 6-1 win in the next set. And with the momentum with her, Johnston closed out the match with a narrow 7-5 win.

Also, Elyse Maggiori beat Gabriela Bianculli 6-3, 6-3 and Amanda Soo Ping Chow defeated Kezia Koroma 6-3, 6-0. Lee-Anne Lingo and Kezia Koroma have withdrawn from the tournament through injury.
