FORMER Kingston College outstanding quarter-miler, Leford Green, continued his rapid progress this season in the men's 400 metres hurdles, as he raced to a personal best of 48.67 seconds, to capture the event at the NCAA Division 11 Track and Field Championships on Saturday in Charlotte, North Carolina. Green, competing for his former high school coach, Lennox Graham, for Johnson C. Smith University, was at his best since taking up the event seriously this season, bettering his previous best of 49.46 seconds, which was done in Atlanta, Georgia, two weeks ago.
In the process he became the country's top man in the event, surpassing Isa Phillips' time of 48.87 seconds, which was done at the Jamaica International Invitational in May.
Clean sweep
Green's win led a clean sweep of medals in the event by Jamaican athletes, as Steve Banton and Sabiel Anderson, also from the Victor "Poppy" Thomas-coached Lincoln University, finished second and third, respectively.
Banton formerly of St Elizabeth Technical High School, clocked 49.85, while Anderson, formerly of Camperdown, stopped the clock at 49.92.
Green, who has represented the country at the senior level, was also second in the men's flat-400, in 45.68. His teammate, Akino Ming, who also competed locally for Kingston College, finished fourth in 45.96 seconds.
Former Camperdown sprinter, Kimour Bruce, now competing for Lincoln University, captured the men's 100 metres in 10.37 seconds.
Female section
In the female section, former Alpha Academy athlete, Shermaine Williams, competing for Johnson C. Smith in the 100 metres hurdles, won in 13.14 ahead of former Vere hurdler, Indira Spence, who clocked 13.15. Williams' teammate, Rosemarie Carty, also a past athlete from Alpha, finished third in 13.37.
Former St Andrew High athlete, the multi-talented Anna Kay Campbell, had a second-place finish for Lincoln University in the long jump event, leaping 6.08 metres. Her teammate, Racquel Anderson, registered the same mark, but won on the count back.
The Lincoln University 4x100 metres women's team, which included former St Jago sprinter Sudian Davis, won in 44.73 seconds. Johnson C. Smith, with Williams, Carty and, Monique Kelly, formerly of St Andrew High, finished third in 45.24.
