TRINIDAD and Tobago’s Emile Abraham secured the silver medal yesterday in the final of the road event at the CAC Games in mayaguez, Puerto Rico.
The Tobago-born cyclist who campaigns in the US finished the gruelling 145.3 kilometres grind as runner-up in a bunch of riders in a time of three hours, 30 minutes and 51 seconds.
The race was won by Venezuela’s Honorio Machado in a similar time (3:30.51) while Mexico’s Luis Macias got the bronze.
There was also good news for Trinidad and Tobago’s boxers who collected two more bronze medals. And the potents are good for a silver or gold medal from top amateur boxer Andrew Fermin.
On Tuesday evening Toriq Haqq and Aaron Prince were beaten in the semifinals of their respective divisions for bronze medals. In the first encounter Prince, who fought in the Men’s Welterweight division- 69Kg, was outclassed by hometown favourite Christian Peguero (Puerto Rico) 11-2.
And later in the Men’s Super Heavyweight division- 91Kg, Haqq failed to control a persistent nose bleeding problem, to lose out 4-0 to Gilton Zimmerman of the Netherland Antilles in the semi-finals.
Also Dorian Alexander in taekwondo lost in the semi-finals in the Under- 68kg to claim the bronze medal.
The medal haul carries TT’s tally to 24 (6 gold, 7 silver, 11 bronze) And are now in ninth position on the medal standings. The previous record medal haul was 21 and the TTOC medal objective before the opening ceremony was 22 medals including eight gold medals.
The previous gold medal record was seven.
Meanwhile Fermin holds the key for a silver or gold medal after he defeated Israel Duffuss of Panama 4-3 in a Light Heavyweight semifinal encounter. He will take on Francisco Ortega of Mexico in the final.
Meanwhile Janeil Belleile earned bronze in the Women’s 400 Metres finals on Tuesday night. She produced a personal best time of 56.81 seconds in the final which was won by Nickiesha Wilson of Jamaica in 55.40 seconds.
Mexico’s Zudikey Rodriguez also produced a personal best time of 55.54 seconds in the one-lap hurdles event for the runner-up position.
In hockey, TT’s women advanced to the final after defeating the Dominican Republic 6-1 in a semi final encounter yesterday.
