CANADA and the Leewards Islands’ Caribbean Twenty20 campaigns came to a dull end yesterday with persistent rain forcing their Zone “A” match to be abandoned at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain. The match was scheduled to bowl off at 4 pm, but light rainfall forced the ground staff to bring on the covers preventing both teams from going through their warm-up.

There was a brief reprieve at 3.58 pm before conditions worsened and heavy rainfall commenced. Umpires Billy Doctrove and Normal Malcom officially called the match off at 5.35 pm and stated that further inspections would be made before making a decision on the second match between Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica scheduled to start at 8pm.

Both teams have advanced to the semi-finals and are battling for the top spot in Zone “A”.

Canada and the Leeward Islands finished the tournament with one point each. The Canadians were specially invited by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) for the Caribbean Twenty20 tournament which replaced the Stanford 20/20.

However, they were unable to make an impact at the regional Twenty20 tournament losing their first two matches by nine wickets to both Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica

The Leeward Islands also failed to deliver on their promise, losing their opening match by nine wickets to Jamaica before suffering the wrath of Kieron Pollard whose “Man-of-the-Match” knock of 53 from 20 balls enabled Trinidad and Tobago to secure a five wicket win.

The first two group matches of the Caribbean Twenty20 tournament were played at Kensington Oval in Barbados with the final group matches, semi-finals and finals being played at the Queen’s Park Oval.
