QUINCY ALEXANDER, the Male Athlete of the Year at the 2011 First Citizens Sports Foundation Youth Awards, has called for improved administration in order for the sport of cycling to progress in Trinidad and Tobago.
“It (cycling) is growing in terms of popularity and fame but the administrators just need to be better and it will be okay,” said the 18-year-old Alexander, after Friday evening’s ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Port-of-Spain.
The Arima native was given the judges’ nod as the top male athlete following his gold medal performance in the men’s match sprint at the Pan American Junior Cycling Championships in Mar del Plata, Argentina.
“I’m pretty elated,” was how he described his feelings upon receiving the award. “It’s becoming the norm.
“It just shows all the dedication (and) the focus in 2011,” he continued. “It brings success so I’m elated about it.”
For this season, Alexander stated, “my goals for 2012 (are) very simple, just to qualify for the senior Pan American Championships because now I’m in the senior ranks.”
This year’s Pan Am Championships will take place at Mar del Plata from March 5-9.
