Spanish La Liga club Atletico Madrid will continue construction of its new La Peineta stadium without installing a running track, following Madrid’s failure to secure the 2020 Olympics and its decision not to bid for the 2024 edition.

The new 70,000 capacity stadium, commonly referred to as The Comb, was a proposed track and field venue for the 2020 Games that would become Atletico’s new home stadium from the start of the 2016/17 season.

Club owner Miguel Angel Gil Marin also expressed confidence in a 2015 completion deadline, stating that the current Spanish economic climate will not affect the contractors or the build.

However, stadium architect Antonio Cruz believes that the venue will not be completed until June 2016, with two years needed for the build and a further year used to assemble and install the roof, according to Spanish news agency EFE.
